About

I started where software meets hardware: 8 years writing C# that talked to measuring instruments, where a bug meant a factory machine reported the wrong dimension. Writing device API guides for OEM partners pulled me into developer experience, then docs-as-code and OpenShift at Red Hat. At Meta, that grew into AI engineering: retrieval, MCP servers, and evaluation harnesses that keep generated content honest.

I’m Joshua Coty Christopher, a senior software engineer in Kansas City working on developer experience and AI tooling. At Meta I build the systems behind VR developer documentation: MCP servers that give assistants the real SDK surface, a Claude-based screenshot pipeline I co-built, where a vision model checks each capture against its procedure, and an evaluation harness that scores generated docs against source-of-truth SDK signatures. Most of it is retrieval and evaluation engineering, not model training.

Before Meta, I led documentation for container and virtual machine migration onto OpenShift at Red Hat. Before that I was a full stack developer at Mitutoyo, building C# and .NET software for measurement data and quality analysis in manufacturing.

I build the sample project before I document it, and I keep a human review gate on anything generated.

Experience

  1. to Present

    Meta

Senior Software Engineer, VR Developer Platforms Menlo Park, CA

    • Expanded a technical-writing role into AI documentation automation, building and owning the systems that generate, validate, and structure developer content across the VR SDK portfolio.
    • Co-built a Python and Claude screenshot pipeline that replaced manual capture: it drives the app, captures UI state, and uses a vision model to confirm each image matches its procedure.
    • Built MCP servers and an evaluation harness in Python so assistants answer from the real API surface; generated docs are scored against source-of-truth SDK signatures.
    • Led a restructure of the Meta Quest Unreal Engine docs: 65+ updates and rewrites, a reorganized information architecture, and redirect-mapped URL migration.
    • Own docs for every major release of two Unity SDKs (8+ versioned releases), developed content for 40+ Wit.ai REST APIs, and authored the organization-wide developer docs style guide.
    • Designed and refined AI-augmented authoring pipelines on Claude and Llama 4: draft generation from SDK source, structural rewriting, and automated consistency checks against the style guide.
    • Restructured content for machine retrieval: chunk boundaries at semantic units, version and platform metadata on every chunk, and procedures that stay correct when retrieved out of context.
    • Scored generated documentation against a held-out set of human-written reference pages as well as SDK signatures, so prompt-chain regressions are caught before a developer sees them.
    • Measured and drove down hallucinated API references, the failure mode that mattered most.
    • Owned the prompt engineering and Python orchestration: few-shot examples from the style guide, schema-constrained output, and staged passes instead of one oversized request.
    • Evaluated fine-tuning against prompting with retrieval and kept retrieval, since the SDK surface changes every release.
    • Kept a human review gate on everything generated.
    • Lead developer documentation across Unity, Unreal Engine, and Horizon Studio, covering three engine idioms and three developer audiences.
    • Build the sample projects before documenting them, and partner with SDK engineers so breaking changes ship with migration guidance.
    • Maintain versioned documentation across concurrent SDK versions, including deprecation notices and upgrade paths.
    • Track discoverability with search analytics and developer feedback, and ran the redirect audit after the Unreal restructure.

  2. to

    Red Hat

    Principal Technical Writer Raleigh, NC

    • Led documentation for Migration Solutions: container, application, and VM migration onto Red Hat OpenShift.
    • Served as Technical Lead for the group and managed docs for Red Hat’s next-generation open-source modular publishing platform.
    • Worked docs-as-code throughout: AsciiDoc in Git, merge-request review, and CI builds; set up Vale style linting and Python checks for cross-references and broken steps.
    • Improved onboarding so new writers reached productivity roughly twice as fast.
    • Installed and migrated the products being documented rather than relying on an engineering walkthrough, which consistently surfaced missing prerequisites.
    • Contributed to the Red Hat Style Guide and to the modular documentation standards separating concept, procedure, and reference content.
    • Coordinated upstream community documentation against downstream supported product documentation.
    • Aligned delivery to Red Hat release trains, including errata and z-stream updates.
    • Worked with Support to prioritize the documentation gaps that were generating tickets.

  3. to

    Mitutoyo Research & Development America

    Full Stack Developer Kirkland, WA

    • Built C#/.NET desktop apps (WinForms, then WPF) and web apps for measurement data and quality analysis in automotive, aerospace, and medical-device manufacturing.
    • Wrote the instrument integration layer over RS-232, USB, and Ethernet, with real-time acquisition, local buffering, and retry for unreliable shop-floor networks.
    • Built the statistical process control module (Cp, Cpk, Pp, Ppk), designed SQL Server schemas for measurement records, and tuned the queries as customer databases grew into tens of millions of measured features.
    • Wrote the device API integration guides for OEM partners, the work that led to my move into developer experience.
    • Built an ASP.NET MVC dashboard so plant managers could see line status in a browser without a client install.
    • Wrote the import and export layer for legacy file formats holding years of historical measurement data.
    • Localized the applications for English and Japanese, coordinating across a 16-hour time difference.
    • Built the installer and update mechanism for locked-down manufacturing networks with no outbound internet access.
    • Worked with hardware engineers on calibration routines and tolerance handling that respect measurement uncertainty.
    • Introduced unit testing with NUnit and regular code review, and helped move the team from Subversion to Git.
